シャルロットは小型機のパイロット、ピエールと再婚しており、前夫との間にできた息子ニコラと３人で暮らしている。そんな彼女は、３ヵ月前から地方巡業劇団員ロベールと不倫している。ピエールは疑念を抱いて、私立探偵を雇い、妻を尾行させていた。対するシャルロットも尾行を警戒して、ロベールとの情事の前後にはタクシーを何台も乗り換えている。ある日、彼女は医師から妊娠３ヵ月と知らされる。しかし、父親はピエールなのかロベールなのか分からない。シャルロットはロベールとホテルで密会し、ある問いをする。
